Homophobia Research - Free Essay Example

I am writing about homophobia and Im going to explain how they were treated, specifically in the 1900s. Homophobia is and was a huge debate within our world. Many people absolutely go against it, saying that it is not natural. At the same time, what is normal? In the 1900s, homophobia was a wicked time. Most people back then denounced homosexuals. Specifically, gays. Not necessarily lesbians because that wasnt a huge issue for them. Men had to fear to be themselves for such a long time. On June 26, 2015, the US legalized same-sex marriage and the ability for them to adopt children. So, if they changed the law, then why does homophobia still exist? II For many years, homosexuals were viewed as not equal or just as freaks. In reality, they just are people who like the same-sex. The whole concern with homosexuality is based on religion. Many people who believe in god or another form of the idea, say that it is a sin. That God said that it is a sin for a man to lie with another man the same way they do with women. Then, humans decided to go with that saying and abolish those who betrayed Gods words. A single bible page should not be worth a humans life. God said Love Thy Neighbor. That quote alone can make num erous of the problems that happen today, gone. For decades, homosexuality was intensely stereotyped and frowned upon. Being gay was not normal and or disturbing. In 2018, thankfully, people are more open-minded. In the year 1967, gays and bisexual men could share their freedom. However, between 1967 and 2003, 30,000 gay and bisexual men were detained(COOTTDA). So for about a whole four generations, gays and bisexuals would have to fear and conceal their true selves. Those who werent afraid to be who they are were detained as it was still strongly disapproved. Now sure, the US and most countries have legalized same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, 2.9 billion people still live under laws which criminalized same-sex relationships. Thats nearly half of the worlds population(ALHOH). Also, to be precise, there are more than 70 countries where homosexual acts are illegal. The death penalty is in place for same-sex sexual acts in at least 10 countries(PPAP:GRATW). For the people who identify as part as the LGBT, these laws are preventing them to be them. It is not fair that people who identify as LGBT in the US can freely express who they are and their sexuality without getting punished. For those who live where it is illegal, even staring at someone for too long you can be detained for showing homosexual tendencies. Bars, restaurants, and carbets were threatened with loss of their liquor license if they employed homosexuals. 50,000 men were arrested for being openly gay, Many gays were threatened with police raids, harassment, and the loss of their jobs (AGVAF). Most men were afraid and kept quiet about who they are. Those who spoke up and fought for what they believed in (in that case it was the right to be treated with the same respect and to be protected by laws. Even though they may have lost everything, they still stayed strong and fought harder. For many centuries this has been going on but now, it is slowly coming to an end. Many lives were lost and many innocent people were killed. Henry Vll passed a law making male homosexuality punishable by death. In 1835, the last two men were hanged from this law (ABHOH). Many of them were open viewing and people were able to see them pass away. This law was intolerable but it stayed in effect for decades. The effects of this lasted for centuries. Many people, to this day, are still afraid that this might happen to them. Sure, its legalized but that doesnt stop people. In 1992, correction camps were created. Correction camps are basically a camp where they try to convert the LGBT into straights. In the past, some mental health professionals resorted to extreme measures such as institutionalization, castration, and electroconvulsive shock therapy to try to stop people from being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (BP: TFACT). Democrats are trying to pass a law where in Colorado, correction camps should be banned. It passed the first test but is still legal. This is devasting news since numerous people are still suffering. III Since this problem, people turned against each other for our differences. It has caused more hatred and conflicts within our nation. There has been a mass shooting, in Orlando which killed 49 people and it is possibly caused by a hate crime. Those 49 lives were taken just because they were apart of the LGBT community. If this problem isnt solved, the world will just crash. We will begin to just despise each other for our differences. Our nation has a chance of crumbling and going back to our old ways. Lets not forget what those old ways are: correction camps, torture, dismembering body parts, being killed, and the loss of their jobs. We honestly cant risk going back into our old ways. Mostly because it will probably kill more people than ever before. The people in this world will turn against each other. There is so much hate in the world that countless people wonder when will it stop. The answer to that question is, it will end when we decide that it will end. We continue to len gthen this discrimination thing. If we dont stop this now, then the future generations will have to clean up what these three generations did. IV The only solution we have to this problem is if we grow up and accept each other and treat each other with respect. You dont have to agree with it, but you still need to treat the person with respect. Suprise! They are still human beings. So, start being kind to your family, friend, co-worker, and basically everyone. What wont work is people just telling other people to be more open-minded. The reason why that wont work is that, simply, people generally dont listen to others suggestions or advice. What also wont work is being positive about this subject. Sure, things have gotten way better. Still, that doesnt mean it is finished. Weve come along way, but we still have a long way to go. The only thing stopping us from doing this is us. V The question, why does homophobia still exist, will never be accurately answered. This generation has made such progress with this type of issue. All the generations need to work together and understand each other. Each generation has had different struggles and its about time that the human race comes together and helps each other out in this struggle we call life. It would be easier for humans to work together than against each other.

The History of Chapstick and Carmex Popular Lip Balms

Dr. C. D. Fleet, a physician from Lynchburg, Virginia, invented Chapstick or lip balm in the early 1880s. Fleet made the first Chapstick himself that resembled a small wickless candle wrapped in tin foil. Chapstick and The Morton Manufacturing Corporation Fleet sold his recipe to fellow Lynchburg resident John Morton in 1912 for five dollars after failing to sell enough of the product to make it worth his continued efforts. John Morton along with his wife started production of the pink Chapstick in their kitchen. Mrs. Morton melted and mixed the ingredients and then used brass tubes to mold the sticks. The business was successful and the Morton Manufacturing Corporation was founded on the sales of Chapstick. A. H. Robbins Company In 1963, the A. H. Robbins Company bought the rights to Chapstick lip balm from Morton Manufacturing Corporation. At first, only Chapstick Lip Balm regular stick was available to consumers. Since 1963, a number of different flavors and types of Chapstick were added. 1971 - four Chapstick Lip Balm flavored sticks were added1981 - Chapstick Sunblock 15 was added1985 - Chapstick Petroleum was added The current manufacturer of Chapstick is the Wyeth Corporation. Chapstick is part of Wyeth Consumer Healthcare division. Alfred Woelbing and the History of Carmex Alfred Woelbing, the founder of Carma Lab Incorporated, invented Carmex in 1936. Carmex is a salve for chapped lips and cold sores; the ingredients in Carmex are menthol, camphor, alum, and wax. Alfred Woelbing suffered from cold sores and invented Carmex to find a solution to his own health issues. Carmexs name comes from the Carm from Woelbing labs name and ex was a very popular suffix at the time, which resulted in the name Carmex.

Daniel Websters Seventh of March Speech

As the United States struggled with the deeply divisive issue of slavery a decade before the Civil War, public attention in early 1850 was directed to Capitol Hill. And  Daniel Webster, widely regarded as the nations greatest orator, delivered one of the most controversial Senate speeches in history. Websters speech was widely anticipated and was a major news event. Crowds flocked to the Capitol and packed the galleries, and his words traveled quickly by telegraph to all regions of the country. Websters words, in what became famous as the Seventh of March Speech, provoked instant and extreme reactions. People who had admired him for years suddenly denounced him as a traitor. And those who had been suspicious of him for years praised him. The speech led to the Compromise of 1850 and helped to hold off open warfare over slavery. But it came at a cost to Websters popularity. Background of Websters Speech In 1850, the United States seemed to be splitting apart. Things seemed to be going well in some regards: the country had concluded the Mexican War, a hero of that war, Zachary Taylor, was in the White House, and newly acquired territories meant the country reached from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The nations nagging problem, of course, was slavery. There was a strong sentiment in the North against allowing slavery to spread to new territories and new states. In the South, that concept was deeply offensive. The dispute played out in the U.S. Senate. Three legends would be the major players:  Henry Clay of Kentucky would represent the West;  John C. Calhoun of South Carolina represented the South;  and Webster of Massachusetts would speak for the North. In early March, John C. Calhoun, too frail to speak for himself, had a colleague read a speech in which he denounced the North. Webster would respond. Websters Words In the days before Websters speech, rumors circulated that he would oppose any sort of compromise with the South. A New England newspaper, the Vermont Watchman and State Journal, published a dispatch credited to the Washington correspondent of a Philadelphia newspaper. After asserting that Webster would never compromise, the news item lavishly praised the speech Webster had not yet delivered: But Mr. Webster will make a powerful Union speech, one which will be a model of eloquence, and the memory of which will be cherished long after the orators bones shall have mingled with the kindred of his native soil. It will rival Washingtons farewell address, and be an admonition to both sections of the country to fulfill, through union, the great mission of the American people. On the afternoon of March 7, 1850, crowds struggled to get into the Capitol to hear what Webster would say.  In a packed Senate chamber, Webster rose to his feet and gave one of the most dramatic speeches of his long political career. I speak today for the preservation of the Union, Webster said near the beginning of his three-hour oration. The Seventh of March Speech  is now considered a classic example of American political oratory. But at the time it deeply offended many in the North. Webster endorsed one of the most hated provisions of the compromise bills in Congress, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. And for that, he would face withering criticism. Public Reaction On the day after Websters speech a leading newspaper in the North, the New York Tribune, published a brutal editorial. The speech, it said, was unworthy of its author. The Tribune asserted what many in the North felt. It was simply immoral to compromise with slave states to the extent of requiring citizens to become involved in capturing fugitive slaves: The position that Northern States and their Citizens are morally bound to recapture fugitive Slaves may be good for a lawyer, but is  not good for a Man. The provision is on the face of the Constitution. True, but that does not make it the duty of Mr. Webster nor any other human being, when a panting fugitive presents himself at  his door begging for shelter and the means of escape, to arrest and bind him and hand him over to the pursuers who are hot upon his trail. Near the end of the editorial, the Tribune stated: We cannot be converted into Slave-catchers, nor  can Slave-catchers operate freely among us. An abolitionist newspaper in Ohio, the Anti-Slavery Bugle, blasted Webster. Quoting the noted abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, it referred to him as the Colossal Coward. Some northerners, especially business people who preferred tranquility between the regions of the nation, did welcome Websters appeal for compromise. The speech was printed in many newspapers and was even sold in pamphlet form. Weeks after the speech, the Vermont Watchman and State Journal, the newspaper which had predicted that Webster would deliver a classic speech, published what amounted to a scorecard of editorial reactions. It began: As to Mr. Websters speech: it has been better praised by his enemies and better condemned by his friends than any speech ever before made by any statesman of his standing. The Watchman and State Journal noted that some northern papers praised the speech, yet many denounced it. And in the South, the reactions were considerably more favorable. In the end, the Compromise of 1850, including the Fugitive Slave Act, became law. And the Union wouldnt split until a decade later when the slave states seceded.

Peter Shaffers Amadeus Essays - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart In Fiction

Peter Shaffer's Amadeus I believe that there are two ways to critique Peter Shaffer's Amadeus. The first, and the easiest for me, is as an artistic work only. As an artistic endeavor, Amadeus is a triumph. Particularly stunning is F. Murray Abraham's performance as the tortured Court Composer Antonio Salieri. Abraham portrays a talented yet mediocre musician who, having revered God all his life, shows us clearly that pride goeth before the fall. It is Salieri's greed for fame, and pride in his own moral goodness that lead him to denounce Mozart as a fiend. When God continues to shower favor upon mozart, Salieri renounces God, and vows that he will be the instrument to thwart God. Salieri's Fall from Grace is brilliantly documented, and Abraham's performance utterly believable. Tom Hulce does a splendid job portraying Shaffer's Mozart. His wild antics and child-like behavior are charming, his laugh infectious and singular, and his mannerisms unique. However, it is the moments when a different Mozart is glimpsed -- the tender father, the infuriated court composer, and the dying genius -- that Hulce's talent shines through. To play a buffoon well is one thing, and to show a serious side to that buffoon another. To do it all convincingly is the key to the range of Hulce's abilities. Additionally, the film is beautifully shot, the costumes enchanting and the set design marvelously detailed. The lighting in the final scene (depicted above), with its contrasting dark shadows and harsh glare, is especially creative. This Academy Award-winning film was crafted with great skill, and is worthy of the acclaim it received. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The second way to analyze this film is as a factual account of history, and here is fails miserably. It is true that Peter Shaffer himself calls it a fantasia based on fact. It is not a screen biography of Mozart, and was never intended to be. The argument, of course, is to say that this film gave many people that first real exposure to Mozart, and as a result, gave them untruths upon which to base their knowledge. That is to say, to the everyday person who knows nothing of Mozart, there is no reason to think the events described in Amadeus are anything but the truth. Why perpetuate rumors and myths, when the truth is available? I choose not to enter into this argument. There are valid points to be made on either side. I will, however, point out some of the more glaring mistakes: * While the movie shows the dying Mozart dictating his Requiem to Salieri, it actually was his pupil and assistant S?ssmayr who helped him with it and finally completed the score. The existence of S?ssmayr, as well as that of Lorenzo da Pointe, is nowhere mentioned in the movie, though they each played a far more critical role in Mozart's life than many of the characters who are shown in the film. * Constanze Mozart may have been prone to spending time at the spa in Baden, but she hever packed up and ran out on her husband, as she is made to do in the movie. Nor did she ever throw Mozart's father out of the house. * The Mozarts had two surviving children, not one as depicted in the film. Additionally, four children died in infancy. *Salieri never planted a servant girl in the Mozart household as a spy, nor was it he who commissioned Mozart to compose the Requiem. * Neither Mozart nor Salieri ever conducted an entire performance with two hands; the late 18th century practice generally was to conduct from the keyboard. This is one of a number of stylistic gaffes in the movie. The presentation of Mozart's music, brilliantly performed by the Academy of St. Martin-In-The-Fields and conducted by Neville Marriner, is breathtaking. Whatever other criticisms there are to make of this film, it cannot be denied that it brought about a resurgence of Mozart's works into popular culture. A personal favorite is the Serenade for Winds, K. 361, 3rd movement. As Salieri describes, this piece is exemplary of Mozart's true genius:

It's a good idea to at least skim through each section and course description to make sure you know all your options. Even if you don't love you science, your school may offer science electives on topics you find interesting, such as marine biology or forensic science. Electives are a great chance to go beyond your normal academic boundaries! Step 2: Figure Out How Many Electives You'll Be Able to Take If your school doesn't automatically do this,either on your own or with your guidance counselor,draw up a rough plan of the classes you need to take in order to graduate. To figure this out, firstlook at your high school’s graduation requirements. High schools usually require that students complete a certain number of years of math, science, English, social studies, foreign language, and physical education classes, possibly along with some other courses like religion or health. Makeblank spaces to represent the number of classes you can take (for example, if you have eight class periods in a day and your school year is divided into semesters, make a column for each semester of high school you have left and put eight lines under each of those semesters). This is good information to know early because if you know you won't be able to take a lot of electives, you can make those you do take count by choosing the electives you're most interested in.It also prevents you from taking too many electives early on and running out of space for your required classes. Step 3: Decide How Rigorous You Want Your Electives to Be Are you applying to top schools and want your electives to behigh-level or AP courses? Or would you like your electives to be spaces in your schedule that are less demanding and give you more time to focus on other classes? Ifyou're applying to competitive schools and want to show you had a rigorous course load throughout high school, choose honors or AP courses for electives, or possibly higher-level foreign language classes. Some commonAP courses to take as electives include environmental science, statistics, and psychology. Electivesdon’t always need to be demanding courses though, especially if you are already balancing other difficult classes, perhaps with extracurricular activities or a job on top of that. Don'ttake particularly difficult or time-consuming electives if they will cause your grades in core classes to suffer. To decide, think honestly aboutthe competitiveness of the schools you’d like to attend and the amount of time you’ll have in order to determine how difficult the electives you take should be. You can also alternate between harder and less difficult electives, especially if you know a certain year or semester will be more difficult than others. Step 4: Look for Electives Related to Your Academic Focus A good way to develop a strong college application is to have a clear interest in a particular subject (most likely the topic you plan to study in college). This subject can be anything: biology, writing, playing the piano, computer programming... Colleges like to see passion and dedication to a specific topic, and electives are a great way to show them what your interests are. Choose electives that relate to your main academic focus. For example,if you want to major in business, you could take electives in economics, personal finance, and accounting, or if you want to go to med school, you can make sure to take the main AP science courses (AP biology, chemistry, and physics) along with additional science electives like human physiology and nutrition. Not all ofyour electives need to relate to your academic focus, and it’s fine to have more than one area of interest, but at least some of your electives should relate to what you’d like to study in the future to help show colleges that you are well-educated on the subject and are interested in learning a lot about it. Biography of Idi Amin, Brutal Dictator of Uganda Idi Amin (c. 1923–August 16, 2003), who became known as the Butcher of Uganda for his brutal, despotic rule as the President of Uganda in the 1970s, is perhaps the most notorious of Africas post-independence dictators. Amin seized power in a military coup in 1971, ruled over Uganda for eight years, and imprisoned or killed at least 100,000 of his opponents. He was ousted in 1979 by Ugandan nationalists, after which he went into exile. Deserted by his father at an early age, he was brought up by his mother, an herbalist and diviner. Amin was a member of the Kakwa ethnic group, a small Islamic tribe that had settled in the region. Success in the Kings African Rifles Amin received little formal education. In 1946, he joined Britains colonial African troops known as the Kings African Rifles (KAR) and served in Burma, Somalia, Kenya (during the British suppression of the Mau Mau), and Uganda. Although he was considered a skilled soldier, Amin developed a reputation for cruelty and was almost cashiered on several occasions for excessive brutality during interrogations. Nevertheless, he rose through the ranks, reaching sergeant major before finally being made an effendi, the highest rank possible for a black African serving in the British army. Amin was also an accomplished athlete, holding Ugandas light heavyweight boxing championship title from 1951 to 1960. A Violent Start As Uganda approached independence, Amins close colleague  Apollo Milton Obote, the leader of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), was made chief minister and then prime minister. Obote had Amin, one of only two high-ranking Africans in the KAR, appointed as first lieutenant of the Ugandan Army. Sent north to quell cattle stealing, Amin perpetrated such atrocities that the British government demanded he be prosecuted. Instead, Obote arranged for him to receive further military training in the U.K. Soldier for the State On his return to Uganda in 1964, Amin was promoted to major and given the task of dealing with an army in mutiny. His success led to a further promotion to colonel. In 1965, Obote and Amin were implicated in a deal to smuggle gold, coffee, and ivory out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A parliamentary investigation demanded by President Edward Mutebi Mutesa II put Obote on the defensive. Obote promoted Amin to general and made him chief-of-staff, had five ministers arrested, suspended the 1962 constitution, and declared himself president. Mutesa was forced into exile in 1966 after government forces, under the command of Amin, stormed the royal palace. Coup dEtat Idi Amin began to strengthen his position within the Army using the funds obtained from smuggling and from supplying arms to rebels in southern Sudan. He also developed ties with British and Israeli agents in the country. President Obote first responded by putting Amin under house arrest. When this failed to work, Amin was sidelined to a non-executive position in the Army. On January 25, 1971, while Obote was attending a meeting in Singapore, Amin led a coup detat, taking control of the country and declaring himself president. Popular history recalls Amins declared title to be His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular. Amin was initially welcomed both within Uganda and by the international community. President Mutesa- fondly known as King Freddie- had died in exile in 1969, and one of Amins earliest acts was to have the body returned to Uganda for a state burial. Political prisoners (many of whom were Amin followers) were freed and the Ugandan Secret Police was disbanded. At the same time, however, Amin formed killer squads to hunt down Obotes supporters. Ethnic Purging Obote  took refuge in Tanzania, from where, in 1972, he attempted unsuccessfully to regain the country through a military coup. Obote supporters within the Ugandan Army, predominantly from the Acholi and Lango ethnic groups, were also involved in the coup. Amin responded by bombing Tanzanian  towns  and purging the Army of Acholi and Lango officers. The ethnic violence grew to include the whole of the Army, and then Ugandan civilians, as Amin became increasingly paranoid. The Nile Mansions Hotel in Kampala became infamous as Amins interrogation and torture center, and Amin is said to have moved residences regularly to avoid assassination attempts. His killer squads, under the official titles of State Research Bureau and Public Safety  Unit,  were responsible for tens of thousands of abductions and murders. Amin personally ordered the execution of the Anglican Archbishop of Uganda, the chancellor of Makerere College, the governor of the Bank of Uganda, and several of his own parliamentary ministers. Economic War In 1972, Amin declared economic war on Ugandas Asian population, a group that dominated Ugandas trade and manufacturing sectors as well as a significant portion of the civil service. Seventy thousand Asian holders of British passports were given three months to leave the country, and the abandoned businesses were handed over to Amins supporters. Amin severed diplomatic ties with Britain and nationalized 85 British-owned businesses. He also expelled Israeli military advisors, turning instead to Colonel Muammar Muhammad al-Gadhafi of Libya and the Soviet Union for support. Leadership Amin was considered by many to be a gregarious, charismatic leader, and he was often portrayed by the international press as a popular figure. In 1975, he was elected chair of the Organisation of African Unity (though  Julius Kambarage Nyerere, president of Tanzania, Kenneth David  Kaunda,  president of Zambia, and  Seretse Khama, president of Botswana, boycotted the meeting). A  United Nations  condemnation was blocked by African heads of state. Hypomania Popular legend claims that Amin was involved in blood rituals and cannibalism. More authoritative sources suggest he may have suffered from hypomania, a form of manic depression characterized by irrational behavior and emotional outbursts. As his paranoia became more pronounced, Amin imported troops from Sudan and Zaire. Eventually, less than 25 percent of the Army was Ugandan. Support for his regime faltered as accounts of Amins atrocities reached the international press. The Ugandan economy suffered, with inflation eclipsing 1,000%. Exile In October 1978, with the assistance of Libyan troops, Amin attempted to annex Kagera, the northern province of Tanzania (which shares a border with Uganda). Tanzanian president  Julius Nyerere responded by sending troops into Uganda, and with the aid of rebel Ugandan forces they were able to capture the Ugandan capital of Kampala. Amin fled to Libya, where he stayed for almost 10 years before finally relocating to Saudi Arabia. He remained there in exile for the remainder of his life. Death On August 16, 2003, Amin died in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The cause of death was reported as multiple organ failure. Although the Ugandan government announced that his body could be buried in Uganda, he was quickly buried in Saudi Arabia. Amin was never tried for his gross abuse of  human rights. Legacy Amins brutal reign has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and dramatic films, including Ghosts of Kampala, The Last King of Scotland, and General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait. Often depicted in his time as an eccentric buffoon with delusions of grandeur, Amin is now considered one of historys cruelest dictators. Historians believe his regime was responsible for at least 100,000 deaths and possibly many more.
